Introduction: the article is devoted to the development of the system of intellectual property rights in Russia, from the tsarist times to the modern period. The author identifies several main time periods in this process, each of which carried different qualitative changes affecting the institution of intellectual property, and at the end of the study predicts its future development, based on the previously obtained data. Purpose: covering the system of intellectual property rights in Russia in the dynamics of the historical process, through the establishment of a small essay covering the key moments. Methods: the research methodology consists of the following methods of scientific knowledge – the comparative law, historical and analytical ones. Results: the author traces the transition from the principles of European continental law to the socialist principles in this area, and then – the return to the origins of the post-Soviet period and the independent development of the institution of intellectual property in modern Russian law. Conclusion: the tendency to the rapid development and complication of this legal institution is confirmed, and at the same time some problems requiring public discussion and resolution are identified. This paper is positioned by the author as a small manual for the historical and legal analysis of the institution of intellectual property rights, allowing you to look at this process in the evolutionary dynamics and capable of filling the theoretical base on this issue.
