Introduction: the scientific paper discusses issues related to certain topical problems that arise at the stage of preliminary investigation in connection with the need for documentation of the actions and decisions of authorized officials. The writer highlights and substantiates the importance of the research topic under discussion. Purpose: identifying current problems of documentation based on a comprehensive review of existing studies at the stage of preliminary investigation by analyzing them as well as individual criminal procedural acts and considering the possibility of their improvement. Methods: the author used the dialectical method, generalizations, comparisons, analysis, and others, which made it possible to form the paper. Results: the conducted research substantiates the importance of the issues selected for consideration and identifies a range of possible solutions to the problems posed. The author draws a parallel between the importance of the procedural registration of actions and decisions implemented at the stage of preliminary investigation through the content of the stage itself and its value for the entire process of criminal proceedings. Conclusions: the stage of preliminary investigation is important for the entire criminal proceedings, but even more significant is the documentation of its results, which, in the absence of compliance with the necessary requirements, may be considered illegal and unfounded. There is a need for an even more in-depth study of these problems.
