Introduction: the paper examines the individual issues and identifies the problems of digitalization during the preliminary investigation. The authors have identified and justified the significance and novelty of the research topic being discussed. The chosen problem has identified the purpose of the study as the development of priority steps necessary for the gradual widespread introduction of digital document management into criminal proceedings. Methods: using the dialectical method of research, generalization, comparison, analysis and synthesis and others, it has became possible to write this work and determine the legal nature of digitalization in criminal proceedings. Results: the main results include the undoubted importance of the introduction and widespread use of modern digital technologies, electronic systems and complexes. The paper considers some issues related to the peculiarities of decision-making by investigators using information technologies and notes insufficient attention to the problems of psychological assessment of professional activity. The correlation and influence of digitalization on the form of criminal proceedings is shown. The classifications of criminal procedural acts and documents are identified and analyzed; the impact on the introduction of electronic document management in criminal proceedings is indicated. A phased introduction of digital technologies into criminal proceedings is proposed; the current state and possible prospects are considered. Conclusions: as a result of the study, the need for amendments to the criminal procedure legislation on the use of information technologies has been identified. The importance of continuing scientific research in this area has been noted. The necessity of studying the psychological impact of the introduction of electronic document management has been established.
