Abstract. The article deals with the specifics of the constitutional and legal status of the republics within the Russian Federation, the relationship of federalism to ethnic policy. The author investigates some aspects and directions of the regional state-building of the republics of Southern Russia from the perspective of the historical changes that have occurred in post-Soviet period.
