Abstract. The article is dedicated to the analysis of the evolution of the concept of the «legal state» in French jurisprudence. The author considers the history of formation and development of this concept, reveals its content, notes the debatable aspects of its essence, shows the theoretical and practical significance of the investigated views.

Key words: legal state, law, power, legitimacy, general will, parliamentarism, legicentrism.
