Abstract.In the article the author undertakes the attempt to consider the origin of the institution of elections to the local government body in the IX–XV centuries Russia. It is stated that the origin of electoral principles should be connected with the activity of Old Russian veche. Accordingly the procedure of the prince electing, veche social status, the causes of veche institute decaying are described.
