Abstract. The article focuses on the problem of imperial authority specification in the Byzantine Empire in the XIII–XIV centuries. The subject matter of the research is political and legal views of the Byzantine
intellectual elite on the nature of imperial authority.

Key words: history of political doctrines; history of the Middle Ages; history of Byzantium; the nature of authority of the Byzantium emperor; the early Palaiologan period.
